PARIS — Growing up in Paris, the shoe maker Christian Louboutin used to sneak into the second half of cabaret shows when no one was looking.

So perhaps it is not all that surprising that he was the first guest asked to create part of a show for the Parisian cabaret Crazy Horse, known more for nude reviews than its fashion advances.

Mr. Louboutin created four tableaus, with the British knitwear designer Mark Fast creating costumes. The show, "Feu," or "Fire," is scheduled to open on March 5 and run until May 31.

Cabaret was the spark for some of his first collections, Mr. Louboutin said, but "designing shoes inspired by the women of the cabaret and making shoes for actual dancers to dance in are two different things." He was handling a pair of gold leather shoes made up of the letters CRAZY sewn together, featuring 5-inch, or 12.7-centimeter, heels and 4-inch, or 10-centimeter, arches, which are "typical for dancers," he said.

"I learnt a lot here about designing to play with the spotlight on stage and what pops and what doesn't," he said, adding that he planned to embellish the shoes with ruby-like gems.

And with Mr. Louboutin involved, the entire Crazy Horse show naturally puts the focus on legs. At the show's start, a curtain brightened with a glitzy projection of his name rises just slightly to reveal only some dancing feet clad in Louboutin pumps.

"A shoe is nothing without a woman, but once she puts on a shoe she becomes something else," Mr. Louboutin said. "In the show, we started by showing just the lower half of the woman, then the upper half, then went into a play on the question of sexuality."

In one scene, black thongs with knitted beading were stretched over the dancers' torsos like necklaces, a creation of Mr. Fast's.

"Mark said whenever he works with clients he is always being asked, ‘Can you cover more?' ‘Can you cover more?"' Mr. Louboutin said. "Here, we asked him can you cover less. He felt liberated."

A busy day of shaking hands and signing the famous Louboutin red soles culminated in a dinner at LACMA's Ray's & Stark Bar, where art was in motion as guests strutted past a canvas-covered wall being "tagged" by street artist Gallo Love.

(Love is himself a kind of work of art, with a beard and mustache on half his face and a single eyebrow on the opposite side. And he achieved a neat party trick when the canvas on the wall turned out to be canvas tote bags for guests to take home as graffiti-covered mementos.)

Louboutin took a few minutes to chat about his love of global handicrafts, his upcoming gig at Crazy Horse in Paris and the trademark infringement case that has him seeing red.

Q: Does it feel like it's been 20 years?

A: t doesn't seem like that long. I don't see my company as a grown-up because I'm still so enthusiastic. I feel like it's a teenage company.

Q: What's a funny memory you have from the early days?

A: My friend Henri, who is also one of my business partners, said when we started that we needed to get a fax machine. And I said, 'A fax machine? What for? Can we afford it?' He said, 'I think we have to.' We really started from zero. There was one phone for the whole company - one physical phone.

Q: Talk about this 20th anniversary collection. Is it a greatest hits collection?

A: Sort of. When I was working on my book (which celebrates his 20 years in business and is published this month), I realized there are certain ideas that always come back into my designs. For example, I have always loved showgirls and have done many things in reference to those birds of paradise. The Bow Bow (shoe) is about transparency, and the Havana Trash is what I imagine is on the floor at the Tropicana. I've always worked with artisans from different countries, as well as artists, like the 25-year-old graffiti artist Nicolas Michel who tagged some of our shoes. This collection is about all of those things.

Q: You tap into a global network of artisans for your designs. Can you share some of the styles from the anniversary collection that incorporate handicrafts?

A: On these sandals (the Copte style), this is a Coptic cross. These first were made by monks in the north of Egypt. I saw them there and asked if they could be reproduced. These gilded wood heels on the Bois Dore are done by a community in a village in Thailand.

Q: What's been the most popular shoe over the years?

A: The Very Prive and Numero Prive, which have a hidden platform, the Pigalle and the Simple Pump.

Q: Have there been any unsuccessful designs?

A: One design I thought would be popular, and we didn't sell any. It was a spindle heel inside a tassel. I guess people thought it was awkward. There was also a glass wedge with flower petals inside, that looked like you were walking on a bed of roses. Most of the pairs came back because the heel cracked.

Q: You're working on a production opening in March at the Crazy Horse cabaret in Paris, a collaboration with David Lynch and Swizz Beatz.

A: I stayed true to the DNA of Crazy Horse, which is about the embellishment of women, but also the strength of the lighting and repetition. The lighting is very special; it can provoke magic. A French cabaret going African, that's one number. Another number is about shadows and legs. Then there is a hip-hop finale. Mark Fast did the costumes.

Q: You are in the midst of what could be a long and drawn-out intellectual property case with Yves Saint Laurent over the right to use a China Red lacquered sole. What if the ultimate result isn't one you like?

A: I'm not going to hang myself, but I have to stand up for myself and for others. People come to me because they like the shoes but also because they love the story of a person who followed his dream and managed to stay independent for 20 years. What I see is a big company trying to break a small one.

Q: When you want to get away from it all, where is your peaceful place?

A: Portugal. I have a house by the sea. I'm not a Mediterranean type of person, but I like waves. The sound of waves is like the sound of heels. It provokes tranquility. It rocks you.

Some close observers of Syrian affairs say that she is standing resolutely with the regime, others that she is in a state of denial. But a third group contends - quite plausibly - that she is effectively a prisoner, compelled to remain silent and unable to leave the country with her three young children.

"She would be horrified [at what is happening]," says Malik al-Abdeh, chief editor of the Syrian opposition station Barada TV, who grew up in the same West London street as Mrs Assad and knows her family. "She lived most of her life here. Her ethics and morality were formed here. I think she must be genuinely shocked."

"I feel sorry for her. She's in the most difficult position you can think of," says a leading Arab commentator well acquainted with the Assad regime.

"It must weigh heavily on her conscience. Her own family comes from Homs for heaven's sake," says Andrew Tabler, an American scholar and journalist who once worked for her in Syria.

I've always been a fan of New Year's Eve. Granted, my plans have changed dramatically through the years from staying out all night, to dinner with friends to fun in the sun like this year. Newlywed/friends , Kim and Bob Mills, were recently married but decided to wait to combine their wedding celebration with a New Year's Eve party. The results were outstanding! Cruising down the Intracoastal in Ft. Lauderdale with about 60 old and new friends dancing, drinking, eating and enjoying the holiday lights on the multi-million dollar homes and boats was a night we will never forget!

But what did everyone else in Chicago do on NYE? I was very curious so I quizzed some of our town's VICs (Very Important Chicagoans) to find out! Nate Berkus, even though he doesn't live in Chicago anymore but will ALWAYS be considered a hometown boy by moi, spent his NYE at Playacar Palace in Cancun celebrating party guru Colin Cowie's 50th birthday with Padma Lakshmi, Jason and Haley Binn, NBC's Ted Harbert, Clear Channel's Bob Pittman and Chef Todd English. Natalie Cole sang "Unforgettable."

Glam It Girl, Gayle Anthony, reported that her equally glamorous sister, Julie Weindling and her beau Phil Geier, spent NYE at Round Hill, Jamaica, rubbing shoulders and chatting at the pool with Sir Paul McCartney and his family, including his daughter by Heather Mills. Also seen poolside were Ewan McGregor, Ralph and Ricky Lauren and Lauren Bush.

Two school departments reunite after years apart

CONSTRUCTION work has just finished on a ￡7m building which will finally unite the infant and junior departments of a village school under one roof.

Pupils at St Mary's Primary School in Purton were long based at two sites in College Road: the infants in a building dating from 1884 and the juniors in a now-demolished building from about 1955.

But when they return after Christmas, on January 6, all 320 children will be in a spacious, custom-designed building, which was finished as scheduled by last Wednesday.

Ian Tucker, headteacher for six years, said: “I'm absolutely thrilled. There is never going to be another primary school like this again. It's amazing. It's been put forward for an architectural award because of the quality and the style of the building.

“It's going to pull the school together for the first time since it became a split-site school in the 1950s or 1960s, so it brings everyone together for the first time in generations.

“The facilities are all state-of-the-art, lots of break-out spaces for the children, amazing outside play spaces and learning spaces. It's quite incredible.”

The school is one of the last funded through the Primary Capital Programme, an arm of the Building Schools for the Future programme which was axed by the coalition Govern-ment. It is built on the site of the upper school, which was demolished along with the school swimming pool.

The two-storey building has 14 classrooms, each with new furniture, electronic white boards and other IT equipment funded by the school itself.

Each floor has an ICT and library suite, and there is also a large main hall with a sprung wooden floor, which can be divided into two spaces.

Outside, there is a block-paved platform over the roof of half the ground floor, on which children can learn and play.

The design includes a foundation-stage play area, a football pitch specially drained to match FA specifications for schools, and a wildlife habitat area. It also features an amphitheatre seating up to 90 people, for sports events and theatre productions.

The building has lots of eco-features, including the collection of rainwater to flush toilets, photovoltaic panels on the roof and ground source heat pumps.

About 80 per cent of the old junior building has been incorporated into the new development, mainly in the ground- works and foundations.

The Victorian building will be handed back tomorrow to the Diocese of Bristol, which will work with the parish council to determine its future.

The 2nd edition of the annual FAB Night Out took place on Sunday 11th December 2011 at the Landmark Village Events Centre in Lagos.
12 months since its debut edition, the FAB Night Out is definitely one of the most eagerly anticipated events on the Lagos fashion event calendar.

The year's event included the presentation of FAB Awards and fashion showcases by designers including Mimi Lee London, Vonne and Orange Culture.

The red carpet was on FIRE with celebrities and socialistas from the world of fashion, music and media dominating the “pose zone”.

Great outfit, which we'll get to, but first . . . let's talk about how your fashion has changed since your days at Magnificat, when you had to wear a uniform. What do you think about uniforms?

I had to expand my wardrobe for college. Basically, I had uniform pieces, tennis clothes and a few going-out outfits. I've always loved fashion. Going to college, I needed more everyday clothes for going to class. I had to make a decision about clothes every day, whereas in high school, the uniform was easy. I see a lot more pros to high school kids wearing a uniform. It's easier, especially when you go to an all-girls school. It takes away all of the stress of getting ready and is far less competitive.

Up until recently, you worked at Nordstrom. Some of your outfit must have come from there.

The pants are by J Brand, in royal blue. I like bright, bold colors. These are a bit of a splurge -- they're around $175 -- but I can mix and match them through fall, winter and spring. . . . The shoes are Tory Burch Reva flats. I love the look of flats with skinny pants. The blouse is from J.Crew. I love a leopard or cheetah print. I won't overdo the animal print; only wear one piece at a time. Leopard is probably the most popular animal print. I like the neutral top with the bold colored pants.

So, where do you like to shop?

Nordstrom, for sure, especially when I was getting an employee discount. My other favorite department store is Bloomingdale's. They have different pieces that you don't find anywhere else. Of course, I also like J.Crew. But, I do like to shop at little boutiques. In Cleveland, I like Knuth's -- they have one [in Pepper Pike] and one in Westlake. Girl Next Door in Rocky River is good, and there are a few in Chagrin Falls, like Winds of Change.

I'm drooling over your Marc by Marc Jacobs bag. I think I'm in love and a little jealous. Is it an odd time to ask if you have a fashion budget?

I did get it when I worked at Nordstrom. Basically, I've always had a summer job, so when I'm working, I don't stick to as much of a budget as I should, but during the school year when I'm not working, I don't shop as much. While working at Nordstrom, I thought it was important to try to get some great classic items. I would say that I'm a conservative shopaholic!

You've shopped in some fine places. What is your best fashion find?

My Diane von Furstenberg leather jacket. When I interned at Diane von Furstenberg in New York, I got a clothing allowance. At the end of my internship, they let us pick. I got the jacket and a few other things out of the new collection that was coming out. It's a beautiful motorcycle jacket that I will have forever. I'm very cautious with it.

Any pet peeves or fashion don'ts?

I don't want to offend, but people should wear the proper sizes. Don't be embarrassed about being a certain size. Sizes are different in every store, and wearing something too tight or way too big isn't flattering. . . . Also, I hate knockoff bags. I wrote a paper about how unfair it is to the designer.

If money were no object, what item would you love to own?

I want a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes -- the basic, classic pump with the red bottom. Something to dream about. But I am more of a bag person. An Hermes Birkin bag in a smart, basic color would be a dream.

Your love of fashion goes way back. Who are your icons?

I love Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. Some of their designs are a little crazy, and I wouldn't wear them, but they've accomplished so much with their clothing lines -- Elizabeth and James, and the Row. I relate more to Ashley; her style is simpler and more classic. I also like Gwyneth Paltrow, she always looks classic. And from the past, I love Audrey Hepburn. Her simple black dress, pearls and sunglasses -- probably where I got my love for those things.

Did you mention that you have a fashion philosophy?

I love Nina Garcia, fashion director at Marie Claire magazine and "Project Runway" judge. She has a new book out about what to wear for every occasion, and one of the quotes is, "Know yourself and dress accordingly." I think it is so important to know who you are and what your sense of style is. Dress for yourself and know that if you see an item in a magazine, it might or might not work on you.

There are many ways to approach Christmas party dressing. The first, and my favorite, is simply not to attend any parties over the festive season. But presupposing that you are less antisocial than me, I'm going to discuss three possibilities—with the caveat that the holidays are riven with all sorts of seemingly insoluble wardrobe challenges. I'm also going to assume that beyond the end of November, only the desperate or the enormously silly would enter a store; so all of my options this week can be found online and, unless otherwise stated, at the brand's website.

Option One: "I came straight from the office." Another way of saying: "I couldn't really be bothered to change," but it sounds better and may even be a factually correct statement. This approach can equally be used to excuse yourself for sporting a Lanvin cocktail dress to the office, when you are merely showing off ("I have a party later and can't be bothered to change").

What's required here is "foundation" dressing—wear acceptable basics that you can build on for the evening. If you want to wear the aforementioned cocktail dress, then Lanvin's rosette-embellished cotton-jersey dress (￡695) is perfect. I own a similar dress and have worn it more than any other piece of clothing in the past three years. Another good choice is Vivienne Westwood's Anglomania "Drape" metallic, stretch-jersey dress (￡220, ).

Otherwise, try the black-pants-and-shirt option—best shirts from Uniqlo +J (￡29.90) and best trousers, Maria Grachvogel's seamless "Magic Pants" in various styles (from ￡438). Wear the dress or pants with a slouchy jacket, like Miu Miu's leather-trimmed velvet blazer (￡725, ), Balenciaga's tweed wool jacket (￡1,035) or Acne's "Simone" wool blazer (￡510, Matches). Pair with opaque tights and flats, or Lanvin's crinkled-leather knee boots (￡695).

Now comes the tricky part. Appraise what you are wearing. If it's a cocktail dress, wear the diamond studs, strip off your tights and jacket, put on the Louboutins and go. I will leave the makeup to you, but not the fragrance: Chanel No. 5 or Byredo Rose Noir. If you are doing the pants option, you must ruthlessly decide between the necklace and the earrings (you have them both with you to prevent you from rueing the fact that you left the other at home). Wear the shoes without tights under your trousers for a flash of skin and make sure you apply lipstick—browns from Bobbi Brown, pinks from Laura Mercier and reds from Nars. You can keep the jacket, so long as it's not the same color as the rest of your outfit.

Patricia Field has always done things her way.

With a career spanning 45 years and counting, the designer, stylist and boutique owner built her reputation by creating her own blueprint. “If you asked me who I looked up to from the beginning of my career, I would say no one,” Field said. “I didn't see fashion that way. I felt fashion.”

On the other hand, Field has clearly inspired others in the industry. “As a designer, everyone loves her because she does what designers dream of doing: putting together eccentric pieces,” said designer Christian Siriano. “Any designer would love to have Patricia pull for one of their projects because that means she thinks it's interesting, creative, new and special.”

George Malkemus, president of Manolo Blahnik USA, said Field's ability to stay ahead of trends puts her in a unique class.

“She always has an extraordinary take on what's happening on the street before anyone else in fashion,” he said. “She embraces young ideas and young people in a way that very few people in fashion do.”

Born and raised in New York, Field's relationship with fashion started in 1966 when she opened her first boutique in Greenwich Village. The eponymous store, now relocated to the Bowery neighborhood, was a passion project for Field.

“I love retail because there's a truth in it. The money goes on the counter or it doesn't,” she said.

The know-how for the store came from her parents, who owned and operated dry-cleaning businesses. Through them, Field learned the basics: how to work a cash register, build relationships with customers and be fanatical about her work.

Her shop gradually became a primary player on the New York fashion scene, and in 1994, Field launched her own line, House of Field.

Along the way, she also added a new skill to her résumé: styling for TV and film.

A close friend recommended her for a costume job in 1986, a feature film called “Lady Beware” that was shooting in New York. Field said styling for actors was a good adjunct to running her store and was a little less stressful.

And after that, one job led to another.

“When the opportunity came up to do styling on sets, it was a good balance for me because you just sell a service and you walk away,” she said. “Whether it's a six-day commercial shoot or a six-year TV series, the success of it isn't your responsibility. My job is to make the actor feel comfortable and attractive in front of that camera.”

Sometimes, though, the costume design is a central part of the storytelling, as it was on “Sex & the City,” which Field styled for its entire six seasons (and for both movies). It was through the HBO series that Field is credited with turning brands such as Manolo Blahnik, Jimmy Choo and Christian Louboutin into household names.

“The fashion of the show began to make an impression, and the writers were very smart,” Field said. “They hooked into that and started making shoe sound bites, like ‘I lost my Choos,' and writing a scene where Carrie cried over a pair of Manolos.”

Executive producer Michael Patrick King, who co-wrote the show and directed both films, said Field's styling brought an authenticity to the look of the franchise. “Pat added the knowledge of what was real and current in New York that a typical costume designer could never have brought because they wouldn't have the hands-on experience or passion,” King said. “She was daring enough to change up looks every season depending on what was current.”

Through her work on “Sex & the City,” Field won two Emmy awards for costuming and became a sought-after stylist. She then worked on films like “The Devil Wears Prada,” for which she was nominated for an Oscar, and TV's “Ugly Betty.”

Now, Field has come full circle, looking to enrich what first got her hooked on the industry. Putting the focus on her retail roots, the multitasker is planning to convert her design studio into an expanded store by next spring.

Richmond has unique fashion look with art, youth and VCU

Even if one isn't into "fashion" per se, we're all affected by it, if for no other reason than this time of year we're required to retrieve our sweaters, tweeds and boots.

For the devoted, fall fashion is a monumental occurrence, a time to practice layering, for explorations into color and the proud display of animal skins.

It's also hugely important to the economy because the fashion industry employs 4.5 million people, and the average American spends 3.5 percent of his or her income on apparel, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Magazines show us what we should covet; displays in store windows around the world change to show us what's hot.

Although Richmond isn't considered a global fashion leader, some of the city's most fashionable people say Richmonders definitely have a style that's very much their own.

"Richmond is definitely feminine," says Hank Greenberg of Roan boutique in Carytown. If there is an independently owned high-fashion mecca in Richmond, this is it. The boutique stocks some of the most respected, of-the-moment designers in the business, including Lanvin, Philip Lim and Givenchy.

About 1995 — when the store went by the name Coplon's and was in the River Road shopping center — Richmonders were a bit more conservative, he says.

"Now they're a bit more in tune with what's going on globally. When our clients travel, they feel chic as opposed to out of place. Richmond has moved forward substantially," Greenberg says.

Women of Richmond aren't typically drawn to the kind of attention-seeking or even "intellectual" looks you see on women in New York or Washington — women here consider their peer group and don't want to be outlandish, Greenberg says — but they are taking more risks.

"We have a burgeoning youth clientele driving a demand for newness," Greenberg says. "People in their 20s and 30s have a love of fashion. For some of them a new (Christian) Louboutin is more important than a car payment, for sure. We thrive because people put a high value on looking beautiful."

Young people breathe new life into a city, and particularly in one such as Richmond, with its heavy influence of art, people's looks tend to coalesce. One of the premiere boutiques for achieving the "young Richmond look" is Rumors, a shop on the border of VCU's campus that's a collection of what pieces are important to people who follow the rock, hip-hop and art scene.

"Richmond's fashion scene has changed a lot in the last few years," says Marshe Wyche, one of the owners of Rumors and a stylist. With about 1,000 people in the store in a week buying and selling clothing, she says she sees firsthand how people, at least the people near VCU's campus, are thinking about what they wear.

"In Richmond, we're more inspired by what we see on the street. And it's in sections. So in Jackson Ward you see a real hip-hop influence. Near downtown you see artists in dirty overalls. You see women in vintage '50s looks. People are chic here."

Finding chic people has been a passion for Brian McDaniel, who runs the street-style blog Dirty Richmond. Heavily influenced by The Sartorialist, the blog that birthed 1,000 street-style blogs, McDaniel roams Richmond and takes pictures of well-dressed people and posts their outfits online.

A five letter word has everyone anxious to claim what they call their own: color.

Over the past few years, shoe designer Christian Louboutin (pronounced Lou-boo-ton) has become extremely popular with his unique red-soled shoe, with an average cost of $700 a pair.

Many celebrities have been seen sporting the hard to miss red-soled shoes, which have essentially become a trademark for the designer, making them even more of a must-have. It's simple, red-soled shoes equals Louboutins. Right? Well, that may no longer be the case.

In April, Louboutin filed a lawsuit against Yves Saint Laurent for covering the bottom of their shoes in red. It should be noted that the YSL shoe collection covered the bottom of their shoes with other colors as well, not just red.

The judge initially denied the injunction, saying the designer cannot have a monopoly over one color. Since April, Louboutin has filed an appeal.

Louboutin isn't the only company that believes they have sole ownership of a specific color and its placement. Luxury jeweler, Tiffany & Co. has recently decided to step-in and offer support.

Tiffany & Co. filed an amicus curiae brief (a fancy term for a brief written by someone not involved in the case adding their two cents) last week in favor of the Louboutin appeal. Why would Tiffany & Co. involve themselves?

Well, let's just say Tiffany & Co. is well-known for a certain shade of blue, “Tiffany Blue” to be exact.

In 1998 Tiffany & Co. filed a trademark to protect its blue boxes, bags, pouches, etc., and if the judge decides to uphold the original decision in the Louboutin case, the signature “Tiffany Blue” color may be in jeopardy to copycats.

A decision is expected early next year.

“We are enormously pleased that Tiffany has weighed in,” Louboutin attorney Harley Lewin said in a Women's Wear Daily article. “Tiffany has not only agreed with our arguments, but it also put forth arguments that strengthened the case and made the point that the [earlier] decision should be reversed.”

According to a Wall Street Journal blog, a lawyer for Tiffany told WWD that the jewelry company “is not taking sides in this dispute. We are only trying to assure that this area of the law is not disturbed by an overbroad decision in the lower court.”

I for one believe that both Louboutin and Tiffany & Co. have established such strong branding recognition with their colors, and should be trademarked as such.

However, the question of boundaries is still presented.

For instance, should Paris Hilton then be sued for the pink-soled shoes in her shoe collection?

AMERICAN actress Kristin Davis is best known as the ever-hopeful Charlotte York on Sex And The City, the popular TV show that celebrated female friendships, fabulous clothes and wonderful shoes.

But Davis, 46, is not exactly comfortable with a consumerist culture.

In Singapore to speak at the Conde Nast Traveler World Savers Congress 2011 recently, she tells delegates “it's tough, it's challenging” to embrace green and responsible living in such an environment.

She is in Singapore in her capacity as the patron of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, an organisation in Kenya dedicated to re-introducing orphaned elephants and rhinoceroses back into the wild, and as the global ambassador for Oxfam, an international confederation tackling poverty around the world.

Davis says: “I sometimes have to catch myself. You see a new car and you think ‘Wow, I could get that car, but why do I need a new car, I don't need a new car.' It's an ongoing kind of challenge to not succumb to those pressures.”

Yet, Sex And The City, especially the movie sequels, has been criticised by some for glorifying consumer culture.

Speaking after her speech, Davis, wearing a Prada navy blue dress and Christian Louboutin heels, ponders the irony.

After a short pause, she says: “You know, I could see that point. I think that Sex And The City is meant to be entertainment. We never said we were anything but entertainment. I feel like because we were so successful, people projected a lot onto us.”

She makes a distinction between entertainment and real life, saying: “It's a tough thing to balance when you're making movies. People want to go to the movie theatre and escape and I don't think you can kind of shove messages down their throat.”

Regardless how one might feel about the show, there was no question that it was a big hit and Davis is still very much associated with it.

She says: “Yes! I got called Charlotte last night by a flight attendant on Singapore Airlines. She called me ‘Miss Charlotte'. It was very cute, very very cute. I don't mind at all.”

It also means that she will always get asked questions about how the four women on the show, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kim Cattrall, get along.

Sounding a little exasperated, she says: “It's amazing, 15 years I've been answering this question. The relationship is really good, I've heard from all three of them in the last week. No one ever believes us when we say it. It's weird, I don't know how to change that.”

In an instance of life mirroring art, Davis, who is single, recently adopted a baby girl. Her character Charlotte had done the same thing on the show.

It had been conveyed before the interview that she would be keeping mum on her personal life.

Still, asked if being a mother had made her more concerned about what was happening to the world, she says: “Absolutely, we need to think about what kind of world we are leaving behind to our children. Is it going to be a world of cranes and tall buildings everywhere? That's horrible. Is it going to be a world where there're no animals living in the wild, only living in zoos? This could happen.”

On her passion for working with animals, she says: “I definitely think that I would like to move to Kenya and look after elephants, I really would sometimes, but we'll see.

“I love acting but when you've focused on something your entire life, sometimes it is nice to have this totally different thing to balance it out, it keeps me kind of sane."

Tampa's wealthy making select cash registers ring

Going into this holiday season, there are two consumer economies, really. One economy of the very wealthy, who are on a luxury spending spree, and one with everyone else.

"You've got one group of people who can't find a job or are close to losing theirs," said Cameron Mitchell, who owns the Ocean Prime high-end steakhouse in Tampa. "Then you've got the wealthy."

A growing pile of data shows companies that sell diamonds, yachts, steaks and designer women's shoes are doing better than they have in years, helping split the U.S. consumer market between a world of Tiffany & Co. and a world of Walmart.

That gap is growing quickly in the Tampa Bay area.

For instance, Nordstrom this summer had a waiting list for Chanel sequined tweed coats costing $9,010 apiece. And Neiman Marcus recently sold out of its Christian Louboutin "Bianca" platform pumps at $775 a pair.

How does that happen in an economy flooded with foreclosures and layoffs?

One reason is that families who live primarily on investments have done well. Despite recent volatility, the Dow Jones industrial average has generally hovered around 11,000, almost twice where it stood at the depth of the market in 2009.

The chief executive of Saks Fifth Avenue recently told investors that "We do not see the high-end consumer falling apart." High-end jeweler Tiffany & Co. recently said its quarterly sales rose 30.5 percent from this time last year, and sales are higher than they have been in four years.

And when they go out to eat, the wealthy are spending more.

Restaurateur Mitchell said his Ocean Prime steakhouse in Tampa is the No. 1 performer among all his 30-plus restaurants, and sales at this location grew 10 percent in September.

Yachting is coming back, too. Clearwater-based boat seller MarineMax Inc. recently reversed a string of losses and said sales at stores open more than a year grew 33 percent, compared with a decrease of 17 percent a year before.

"For our customer, it's not a question of whether they can afford it — they can," said William McGill, chairman of MarineMax, the nation's largest recreational boat dealer. "The decision is about how they feel about what is going on in the world. … The pent-up demand has been building."

Overall, sales at luxury store chains climbed 8.5 percent in the seven months ended in August, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers, and global luxury goods sales have continued 2010's double-digit growth rate and will grow 10 percent again in 2011 by one estimate from consulting firm Bain & Co.

This is "not simply a rebound," Bain wrote in a report, "but instead a sustained renewal of spending on luxury."

Looking just below that affluent level, there's a deep and growing gulf when it comes to income and spending.

For instance, despite the disastrous housing market here, the number of Hillsborough County's households making more than $200,000 grew from 13,500 to more than 17,000 since 2005.

Meanwhile the county's overall median income has fallen back to 2006 levels, according to recent census data, meaning the middle section of earners are moving into either the top or the bottom segment, with the lowest-portion growing more quickly.

That dynamic is playing out nationwide, and the investment firm Credit Suisse called it a "bifurcation" between two kinds of households: balance sheet families, and income-statement families.

Balance sheet families generally make their spending decisions by looking at their investment portfolio, not their weekly or monthly paychecks.

That segment of upper-tier households with an annual income of more than $100,000 had an unemployment rate of just 3.6 percent, and their average income grew 10 percent a year, excluding any capital gains from the stock market.

That group saw its share of all income grow from 42 percent to 45 percent during the past decade, a Bain report found, and they are "returning rapidly to robust spending levels."

Christian Louboutin wants his red soles back

This summer, in one of the most interesting rulings I've covered, Manhattan federal judge Victor Marrero likened the shiny red-enamel soles of Christian Louboutin shoes to John Deere's green tractors. Louboutin's red soles -- which made his sky-high heels (with equally sky-high pricetags) instantly recognizable to the fashion cognoscenti -- served an aesthetic purpose beyond mere function, Marrero concluded, just as the color green does for farm equipment. Colors can be trademarked, the judge found, only when they're used to identify a product and serve no other purpose, as in, for example, Owens Corning's pink fiberglass insulation. Marrero ruled that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office goofed when it issued Louboutin a trademark on red soles in 2008. Yves Saint Laurent, he found, is free to sell shoes with red soles.

On Tuesday, Louboutin's lawyers at McCarter & English filed a brief at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit that lays out the many ways they believe Marrero abused his discretion in toppling one of fashion's most recognizable trademarks. "The sweeping per se rule announced by the court below is legally erroneous and must be reversed, because it violates the Lanham Act and controlling precedents of the United States Supreme Court and of this court," the brief said. "It is equally defective because there is no evidentiary support in the record below for the purported factual findings on which the lower court based its per se rule."

Louboutin's lead counsel, Harley Lewin of McCarter, told me Wednesday that Marrero reached his key conclusion -- that permitting fashion designers to trademark colors would hinder competition -- on an undeveloped record. "In our view there was no basis to make that finding," Lewin said. "Judges are supposed to base their rulings on the record before them.'It might' is not the analysis you use."

In the 20 years since Louboutin began using red soles, Lewin argued, there's been no shortage of competition in the marketplace for high-end women's shoes. And particularly because the red sole is "a world famous brand identifier," in the words of the McCarter brief, Marrero was wrong to hypothesize that any limit on a fashion designer's ability to use a color is an encroachment on competition.

"The court's diktat that a single color on a fashion item may not serve as a trademark constitutes an error of law," the brief said. "Color is protectable as a trademark unless it is essential to the use or purpose of the article, or affects its cost or quality. Louboutin's red outsole mark fits neither requirement. By putting a distinctive red color on the previously ignored bottom portion of the shoe, Louboutin established a strong brand identifier. The red outsole has no [other] utility."

McCarter's brief likened Louboutin's red soles to Tiffany's blue boxes, which are trademarked, calling Marrero's line between fashion and industrial uses of color "a distinction without a difference."

"Judge Marrero gave no credit for the most important thing -- the public," Lewin told me. "The argument should be framed from the perspective of the consumer. Does the consumer see the red sole as a source identifier?" (IP litigator Randy Lipsitz of Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel, who is not involved in the Louboutin litigation, agreed with Lewin: "The U.S. Supreme Court has said that in specific situations, color can function as a trademark," he said. "This is a unique situation. Louboutin has been using the mark for years, and it has extreme secondary meaning.")

David Bernstein of Debevoise & Plimpton, who represents Yves Saint Laurent, referred me to a company spokesperson who was not available for comment.

Bajaj Allianz, the life and general insurance company, has launched an 8-city 'Drive Safely' campaign across India with Mercedes GP Petronas F1 driver Nico Rosberg coinciding with the first ever Indian Grand Prix Formula One race scheduled at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh (the 17th race of the 2011 Formula One season) on 30 October.

At last week's Small Business Beanstalk Awards Gala, I had the pleasure of running into Esther (Chung) Hall, the designer behind Torn Angel. She had on the best shoes.
